Many academics currently face the challenges of teaching large classes of more than 450 students. The majority of these classes are also at first or second year level, when students generally need the most learning support. This paper examines these challenges faced by unit coordinators and their teaching teams and draws on their experiences in developing a unit coordination teamwork model , the CLOVERS cog model. This model frames the challenges of teams teaching large classes into the categories of Communication, Learner Focus, Outcome based, Vision, Ethical considerations, Resources, and Strategic links. It argues that adopting a teamwork approach to teaching large classes can help academics deal with these challenges and assist their efforts to provide students with quality learning experiences.
