Abstract

The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Student Mentor Programme and its
involvement in the First Year Student Orientation Programme is discussed.
Student Mentors at AUT are second year, third year and graduate students who are
trained to support first year students. The Mentor programme is designed to help
deliver the new student Orientation Programme and give new students support
throughout each semester. The Mentor programme was a response to a recognition
that students often respond better to other students than to staff members. Participants
are able to develop leadership skills through their involvement in this extra
curricular activity.
