Title: Utilising an organisational learning approach to improve the retention of first year students

Abstract
This paper discusses an ongoing project being implemented at Griffith University, which is designed to develop a strategic approach to improving the retention of first year students. Awareness that change in universities can be slow and incremental and that systematic organisational change requires cross-Element information exchange and learning led to the utilisation of an organisational learning model (Dixon, 1999) in this project. How this approach has been applied to the process of increasing awareness of good practice approaches already operating in university Elements and exchange of information about the wider literature will be discussed in this paper, together with resulting outcomes arising from this project.
