Title: Assessing First Year Students: A Case for Mixed Mode Assessment
Douglas L Morgan
Abstract
This paper challenges some accepted notions of the role of assessment in student
learning. It examines the usefulness of a combination of self, peer and Tutor
(mixed mode) assessment of presentations for enhancing the learning experience
of students undertaking first year studies. It discusses the relative advantages
and disadvantages of three assessment processes and argues that a combination
of all three can create an environment that promotes deep learning and reduces
performance anxiety. It evaluates the experiences of 25 first year students
and finds that deep learning is enhanced through using this process.
