Title: The transition of “at risk” students: strategies for success
Stuart Levy and Julie Murray
Abstract
The Diploma of Foundation Studies, a program offered at Monash University’s
Gippsland Campus, has an established record of successfully easing ‘at
risk’ students through their first year of university (Levy and Murray,
2002). This paper identifies the range of initiatives and approaches that have
contributed to the success of this program, even in the face of increasing institutional
constraints. In a milieu focused on retention, this program confirms the importance
of strategies that encourage students’ engagement with tertiary learning
practices
